Goth Apparel Shoes

This project spanned across multiple classes, crossed an array of mediums, and required many different skill sets.

The Guidelines

For this project we were required to create a brand that would be selling a product. We were allowed to choose any product, with approval. Whatever we chose, however, would need to have at minimum 10 adjacent products that we would later photograph and create fake listings for.

Choosing a Product

I decided on shoes for my product, specifically shoes that aligned with  alternative fashion such as goth. I own a lot of different types of shoes, ranging from platforms and boots to flats and sneakers. This would allow me to bring in my own collection to photograph.

Photographing Product Shots

Here I learned how product photography works. I learned proper lighting and how to use a light tent

Touching up Photos

Using skills learned from past classes, I touched up the photos I took by making the backgrounds solid white and removing blemishes on the shoes.

Masking the Product Photos

We were later required to mask out the products themselves so they could easily be layered or have their backgrounds edited. Some of my product masks can be seen below.

Creating a Website

We were required to design a website for a fictional brand where we would be creating fake listings for our products. When choosing the name, I wanted to convey the style of product I was selling, which led me to the name, Goth Apparel Shoes. This website was created using Web flow which meant we didn’t have an incredible amount of liberty when it came to design and function. Despite this, I am still proud of the website I created for Goth Apparel Shoes.

Creating a Print Layout

Finally, using the photos we had previously taken, the masks we had created, and the information from our websites, we were asked to design a layout for a magazine showcasing our products. I had a lot of difficulty with this assignment at first. I initially planned on using a vertical layout but struggled to make everything fit in a cohesive way. I ultimately decided to switch to a horizontal layout which ended up working out better for the design.

Final Conclusion

This project was a lot of fun and allowed me to build my skills in many different aspects of the field, from photography and Photoshop to web design and page layouts. This project was also my first real experience with the idea of brand consistency.
