Creating an Instagram Reel for Bubly Case Study

The Guidelines

For this assignment we were required to create an Instagram Reel advertising either an existing product or an entirely new product. We needed to complete several pre-production planning steps on Miro, production of a reel, a Case Study about the process of creating the reel, and a YouTube video about our Case Study.

Choosing a Brand

We were instructed to roughly plan out two potential reels. My first reel idea was for a Nature Valley bar. I wanted to capitalize on Nature Valley’s existing value proposition, “better outside.” My plan was to include heavy outdoor imagery. My other idea was for the sparkling water company, Bubly. Bubly has a large range of flavors and uses a lot of solid colors in their advertising which I thought would be fun to work with. The drink is also zero calories which allowed me to use a health angle with the marketing. After comparing my two ideas and considering what I would realistically be able to complete in the given time with the resources I had available, I ultimately came to the decision to follow through on creating a reel for Bubly.

About Bubly

Bubly is a brand owned by PepsiCo that makes sparkling water. Bubly sparkling water is zero calories and they have many different flavors. Most of Bubly’s current marketing uses solid colorful backgrounds and quick transitions to showcase their large range of flavors.

The Challenge

How do I market this sparkling water brand to people?

The Solution

I can focus on the fact that Bubly is zero calories and a healthier option than soda.

Hypothetical Result

People who don’t like water but want something to drink will go for a Bubly instead of a can of soda.

Creating the Reel

Pre-Planning (With Miro)

We began by finding example reels online that we could potentially use for inspiration. We then marked the value proposition, target audience, and how effective we believed the ad was on Miro. This allowed us to have some knowledge on reels prior to creating our own. We also came up with a short social media caption and accompanying hashtags for our reel.

Pre-Production

Planning

I needed to plan where I would be shooting the video footage, how long it would take, and the props and equipment that I would need.

Location:

Photo Lab on Campus

Timeline:
  • Two Days Shooting
  • Two Days Editing
Equipment / Props
  • Tripod
  • Lighting equipment
  • Camera/ Phone
  • Bubly Can
  • Generic soda can

Story-Boarding

I took my initial sketched out story board from the choosing a brand stag and worked on digitizing it. This digitized version of my story board better conveyed the transitions between frames and my technical plan for the reel.

I would later make a prototype animated gif of a portion of my reel as a test run.

Production

For a portion of my reel I wanted to showcase the different flavors available by quickly switching between the cans. This type of editing is consistent with Bubbly’s current branding. I also wanted to utilize the solid color backdrops in many Bubly advertisements and headers. I decided to add the brand’s name behind the cans for added visual interest. This initial gif animation would then be reworked for the final reel. I resized the cans to be more uniform, edited the backgrounds, and added more flavors for the final reel.

I also spent time in the photography lab capturing my own videography for the reel using my smartphone. I wanted to get a video of a Bubly can knocking a regular soda can off screen. This shot took many attempts but I ultimately ended up with the perfect shot.

Post-Production

Once I had finished filming my videography, I began editing. I added my clips in Photoshop and cut them down to fit. I then created graphics that I could include in my video. I created an ending graphic showing off a small lineup of the flavors, the brand name and logo, and a call to action. I also recreated my original Bubly can graphics from earlier.
